SENATE COMMITTEE, COMMONWEALTH

Disaster ready fund

Background

The Senate Standing Committees on Finance and Public Administration held an inquiry into the Emergency Response Fund Amendment (Disaster Ready Fund) Bill 2022. The Bill sought to create a process for spending $200m per year on natural disaster resilience and risk reduction. You can read more about the inquiry here.

Our submission

GAP made a submission explaining how catastrophic disasters are historically neglected and calling for the Bill to explicitly factor them in. You can read the full GAP submission here. Submissions from other related individuals and organisations are also available on the Committee webpage.

Thanks

Our thanks go to the elected officials and public servants who listened to the arguments about the importance of the Disaster Ready Fund including catastrophic natural disasters and made changes accordingly. We are excited about how the Fund is being managed and look forward to seeing what grants it makes in the coming years to tackle global catastrophic risks.
