AGI Tabletop Exercise

Explore the Geopolitics of Artificial General Intelligence

An invite-only simulation for policymakers, national security professionals, and industry leaders

The US, China, and leading AI companies say they're racing towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). What seemed like science fiction a few years ago is now the focus of hundreds of billions of dollars in annual investment—a race comparable to the space race or the development of nuclear weapons.

What if someone wins? What does that mean for Australia and the world?

Good Ancestors and ClearAI are hosting an invite-only tabletop exercise at The Sydney Dialogue to help policymakers, national security professionals, and industry leaders think through these critical questions.

About the exercise

This immersive 3.5 hour simulation is based on materials from the AI Futures Project, with the AI 2027 scenario authored by ex-OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo. The exercise has been run with leaders from frontier AI labs and policymakers around the world.

Participants will role-play key decision-makers (such as CEOs and safety teams of leading AI companies, world leaders, the public, media, nonprofits, and even the AI systems themselves) as they navigate a plausible AGI emergence scenario set in 2028.

What to expect

1

Brief presentation

A brief presentation on the AI race and the geopolitical landscape

2

Four strategic turns

Four 30-minute turns where you'll strategise, negotiate, and make high-stakes decisions

3

Shape the future

Explore how your decisions shape the trajectory of AGI development and global stability

The scenario will be facilitated by Greg Sadler, CEO of Good Ancestors, who previously designed and facilitated exercises on catastrophic disasters at Emergency Management Australia.

Even if you're sceptical about AGI, this exercise will help you understand the mindset driving billions in investment and shape how Australia engages with this transformative technology.

Who should participate

This exercise is designed for senior decision-makers, policy advisers, national security professionals, technology leaders, and those shaping Australia's response to advanced AI systems.

Players need to be willing to put themselves in the shoes of key actors, like the CEO of a leading lab or the President of China – or even play as the AI itself.

This event has concluded

The AGI Tabletop Exercise at The Sydney Dialogue was held in December 2025. Registration is no longer available.
